Protective Hairstyles

What’s the new wave ‘protective styles’ ?! Many women with relaxed hair swear by them. They say it helps their hair grow. So is it true?

Full Sew In w/Closure

Protective styles don’t necessarily make your hair grow, but they do make it possible to prevent excess breakage since your hair may be breaking off faster than it grows. What protective styles do, is keep your hair shaft / ends protected. It’s a good way to stretch the time between relaxers which will prevent thinning due to relaxer overlapping.

Halo Braid

Try  of these protective styles and see if you experience more hair retention. Just make sure, no matter which way you wear your hair, that your edges are not too tight, & your hair is adequately moisturized. Do not keep these styles longer than your stylist stipulates.

Why is your hair thinning?

05dca-hair2bbefore2btransition2b07-2010

Lately, I’ve been having a few clients battling with this unfortunate hair situation. Ā So I figure that now would be as good time to address thinning hair. Some lovely ladies don’t feel confident about wearing their hair down without feeling self conscious about the way their hair looks. šŸ˜¦

dsc00600

The thing about thinning hair is that there can be so many causes of it. Thin hair is 90% a result of something. Ā MyĀ job as a stylist is to seek out and identify what’s causing it, your job is too. If the cause isn’t clear, trying to solve the problem may be pointless. Finding out the true cause may take some work on your end, but if you are serious about making a change, it will be well worth it.

So the facts are…..

YourĀ hair has been shedding like crazy

Every time you comb or detangle, Ā you lose a lot of hairs

Your hair isn’t growing

Why??

Because your hair follicle isn’t strong

Probably because your scalp is unhealthy

Your scalp is the “soil” from where your hair grows, make sure it’s as healthy as possibleĀ The opening on the scalp where the hair grows can actually be blocked off. Once blocked, the hair suffocates and slows growth. Blood flow to the scalp is also important so make sure your body is healthy.

Lets address the reasons & see what you can do….

Stress

The impact of stress on our hair is big.Ā Most obviously we see it in the grays that seem to take over in just a few short years. Ā Hair loss is another resultĀ of stress. When we’re stressed, our body depletes, we usually don’t eat healthy so our blood flow contains fewer nutrients. We also tend to worry which further minimizes circulation. Add this all together and you have the recipe for thinning hair. Ā If you think you are the sufferer of stress related hair loss, you have to take action to shift your state to one where you experiencing joy. This creates a level of openness all over. When you are in an open, relaxed state, things start to flow again. Not just inside but in your external world as well. If you don’t know where to start, begin by positive daily affirmations., Its worth a try

Over Processing

I think the biggest factor in thinning hair is over processing when you incorrectly relax the hair. Over processing could mean using a relaxer strength that is too much or relaxing the hair too often. Try stretching your relaxer to 8 – 19 weeks sometimes. Also have your hair done by a professional, burns leave your scalp unhealthy over time.

Age / Hormonal Changes

With aging comes change. Our skin changes, our bodies change, our hair changes. Thinning hair is one of the signs of aging. This means that we have to fight against the normal effects of getting older. Try to mimic youth through lifestyle changes. Excercise, eat right and take dietary supplements as necessary.Ā Biotin, silica, omega-3s…just to name a few

220Ā biotin-supplements

Stimulation / Products

Massage your scalp and eliminate too much product. Too much grease clogs pores. Try natural oils instead. Peppermint, tea tree oil, castor oil, coconut oil to name a few.

If you choose to incorporate any of the tips I shared here, they aren’t going to happen over night. Instead, its a long-term shift in your lifestyle. Set a personal goal, affirm it and your actions will adjust accordingly. Show gratitude for your hair and be grateful to the new hairs that will come into your life. Ā Remember nothing is permanent and recognize the power you have to create the head of hair that you desire.

Pixie Cuts – for the bold on the go!

Getting a pixie cut seems to be the latest celebrity fashion. Just check out Brandy’s new do on Instagram ā¤

.brandy

Are you itching for this fierce, bold look? Well once you realize it’s not just about a cut, but maintaining that haircut, you’re ready to give it a go.

A pixie cut looks good only when you learn to maintain it properly. Yes, short hair is equal to low maintenance but, then if you wish that your hair to look chic, remain healthy and grow properly, then care for your hair. Its low maintenance but not no- maintenance!!!

Here are some simple tips to keep be a pixie pro…

1.Ā Short hair can become sticky when its dirty. So, you need to shampoo your hair regularly (4 -7 days) and, keep it clean and bouncy. So if you find yourself unable to get to the salon often, try washing your hair in the night, apply a leave-in conditioner and, mold to dry until the morning.

2.Ā Heat should only be used on SPECIAL occasions and NOT everyday or 3-4 times a week. Before using the heat protect your hair with a heat protective serum or cream and not an oil. Keep in mind to use as little heat as possible because it can only do more damage to relaxed hair if frequently used. Tiny rollers are a must-have

3. Use a rectangle shaped silk head tie. For additional support, use a bonnet over the head tie.

4.Ā Opt out of saturating hair with too much product. This leaves your hair looking cake-y. Light natural oils are enough to keep your hair looking shiny.

A hair style is only part of the package. Make sure your life style and personality match up. Pixie cuts are fashion forward, fresh, beautiful with lots of styling options… don’t be afraid to give it a try

Natural vs. Relaxed >>The Great Debate

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
This is one of the hottestĀ  hair debates trending right now. Ā As a stylist I only inform you and let you make the best decision for yourself. Ā There are pros and cons to each. It’s a highly personal decision. Ā Don’t go natural to pleaseĀ those who think all women who wear Relaxers are selling out to look like white women and have low self esteem. Ā Don’t wear a Relaxer because you feel that going natural is a racial statement that you don’t want to make. Ā Having said that, the reality is that if you go natural, some people will assume certain things about your political and social points of view. Ā If you wear a Relaxer, some people will think you have low self esteem

But let’s get back to the hair …..

The truth is that going natural is by no means better or healthier than having a relaxer or a texturizer. Natural hair is hair that is devoid of any chemicals that can potentially alter your curl pattern.

The point is that no matter what you choose , you can still accomplish the same goal of nice, long, strong luxurious hair as long as you give your head of hair the attention and care it deserves and needs. Having natural hair can be fun and rewarding but be prepared for what comes with dealing with your particular hair type and donā€™t beat yourself up if you decide that its not for you. Hair is an accessory so you have permission to change it up and settle on a style that works for you. Either way looking FAB is the objective! Be it ā€˜fro or sleek.

image

Texture is the key word. We all have variations ofĀ  it, so depending on what you are working with, you could find yourself working harder than ever to make the good hair days outnumber the bad ones.

Even your natural hair can absolutely rebel against you if its not well conditioned and moisturized. Afterall, thats the descriptive of what healthy hair is. So get to know your hair, choose how you want to wear it and take care of it šŸ™‚

CO-WASHING – what you need to know…

So the term co-washing has been popping up all over the web and in the black beauty world these days, but what is it? Well, its Condition washing and what that means is that you simply replace your shampoo with conditioner and it can be done as regularly as you wash your hair. This is called a no-poo regime. However, a shampoo is needed every now and then to give your hair a good cleanse.

So here is what i think you need to know before you co.wash as a stylist.

Conditioner washing is more gentle than regular shampooing. It minimizes colour damage and cuts down the stripping of oils caused by some harsh ingredients in shampoo. So if you work out daily or have bleached hair this can be beneficial to you to maintain moisture in both relaxed and natural hair.

If you decide to make co-washing a regular part of your hair care regime, stay away from silicone. Most of the time, the ingredients that end in -cone are sublets of silicone and are very difficult to wash out of hair. They are usually synthetic additives and are not waer-soluble which makes them difficult to dissolve and rinse out of your hair. This eventually ends up leaving build up in your hair.

You can over wash your hair when condition washing. If your hair starts to feel mushy or spongy, then its time to leave that conditioner bottle alone

You have to take the reaction of your scalp to the conditioner into consideration. If you have dermatitis (skin inflammation) it is best you stay away from constant conditioning as this could worsen your condition.

If you have oily hair, the conditioner could add more grease and oil to your hair leading to unnecessary build up. You can use the shampoo instead to remove some of that oil. The opposite applies to people with dry hair

Take your environment into consideration. If you live, work or move around areas with a lot of dust and air pollution you may want to stay away from the conditioner. Conditioners tend to add to the dirt because they are oil based and attract and blind particles. A shampoo would help cleanse all the dirt out .

If your hair is extra dry, then when you co-wash, seal in all that moisture with virgin oil, castor oil or coconut oil and leave it in to dry. This way you seal in the moisture in your hair strands and your hair slowly but surely starts to get all its moisture back.

Now, I know some of you may be thinking twice about that co-washing on a daily basis . I suggest adding a gentle sulfate free shampoo to your weekly hair care regimen.

Beautiful hair between exercise – YES YOU CAN!

Many of my clients are now hitting the gym. I commend all of you who want to have a fit, healthy body.A healthy lifestyle is the way to go šŸ™‚ However, for those that I don’t see on a weekly basis, when I Ā do see them their hair is drier than before. Some also call me asking what they can do to still look great for work the next morning after an evening at the gym.

So, this is dedicated to all my clients, all who send their questions and all of you who are hitting the gym, plus all who want to but prefer preserving their hairstyle.

The main causes of exercise hair damage are salt damage from healthy sweating and the drying agents in shampoos you use at home. Maintaining your hair while you exercise doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.

A little tender, loving workout hair care will keep your hair as fit and healthy as your body.

Lets go,

The most important thing to do while you workout is CHANGE YOUR DIET, DRINK MORE WATER.

drink more water

You may be wondering why the hairdresser is telling you this, but more water lowers the sodium (salt) content in your sweat. Which, by extension lessens the drying effect on your hair & scalp. A GOOD THING!

It is important to keep salt off the ends of relaxed hair. If your hair is short enough to become soaked with sweat while working out you want to protect the ends. Do this by sealing them with oil.

Mizani Supreme Oil Hair Treatment contains all natural oils, easily absorbed by hair

Mizani Supreme Oil is great for this. 2 to 3 drops of oil rubbed in the palms and rubbed on the ends of the hair in sectioned handfuls only takes a few minutes and can save you from many, many split ends.

If you will not be able to wash your relaxed hair after a heavy workout you want to tie the hair down to keep the edges straight. A satin scarf like a sleep scarf is perfect for keeping relaxed hair in place while working out and if left on will help assure that the hair dries straight. Another option is the use of a head band with a silky surface such as a sleep hair band. If your hair is long enough for a ponytail the head band option is probably all you need.

Sweat should be washed out of relaxed hair as soon as possible because of the salt. Salt is drying and will dry your hair out very quickly, especially if on the ends of the hair. Shampooing weekly or twice a week depending on your workout schedule is vital. You can also “co-wash”. Co-washing is using conditioner instead of shampoo; this process for relaxed hair is not as harsh as shampooing and is all that is needed unless the hair is really dirty. What you do is rinse the sweat out of your hair with clear running water then layer on the conditioner and allow it sit. Comb through the hair and rinse out the conditioner. Co-washing also keeps new growth soft and blended with the relaxed hair.

To keep split ends at bay it is important to keep heat application on relaxed hair to a minimum and maintain a healthy moisture. Do not attempt to blow dry hair after a workout session. Allow you hair to air dry! You may want to try roller setting with a leave in conditioner, allow it to dry, then wrapping for a straight style or leaving it as is for a curly look. You may also try moisturising your wrap with coconut oil while you work out. That way, there is little to do when you head home.

Feel free to ask me anything else about working out and your hair on twitter @malibubeautyjm, because I know everyone’s hair & routine is different

Remember,

Allow your workout routine to co-exist with your relaxed hair without causing damage, because no woman should feel she has to choose between improving her health and having healthy hair that she can wear however she chooses. These tips also work well on natural hair

Happy exercising!
